Grant writing is not unlike a job search. There are proven factors that will increase your chances for success:

> Matching a grant with the organization is key. Confirm that the requesting organization’s values and objectives closely match that of the granting organization. Ensure there is mutual benefit by being a good fit. Grantors appreciate knowing their monies are going to an organization with common values and mission.

> Know the numbers. Grants vary widely in their reporting requirements and doing the upfront legwork in collaboration with the organization’s finance staff will create a project budget that makes sense and creates accountability.

> Follow the grant’s guidelines for completing the application and supplementary information. Reach out with questions.

> Write clearly, simply and avoid the use of abbreviations and acronyms. The objective is to ensure that the reader can quickly and easily assimilate what the organization is and does, its values, and what it is hoping to accomplish with the grant.

> And, just like a job search, applying for grant funding is a numbers game. There are many others applying for the same funding; however, the more grants you complete the greater experience gained and the higher your success rate will be.

> Stay positive, actively research grants that are a good fit for your organization(s), keep good records and revel in your successes!
